October 31, 2005: We have just posted a set of isometric maps for our classic adventure and sourcebook

"These maps are pretty straightforward. The only real notes I'd make are for the second map. The vertical distance
from area 31 to 32 has been exaggerated (2:1) to allow a clear view of the lower chambers, and a separate 2D map should
be appended to this map for area 37 specifically."
These fantastic maps were done by Michael Conrad!

PRESS RELEASE: Necromancer Games and Kenzer & Company are Expanding!
|
Necromancer Games, Inc.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Necromancer Games and Kenzer & Company are Expanding!
January 11, 2005 (LAS VEGAS, NV): Necromancer Games, Inc. has partnered with Kenzer & Company to
bring more Necromancer Games products to the game table. As of June, 2005 Kenzer & Company will begin
publishing d20 system adventures and sourcebooks for Necromancer Games. These will be available through Kenzer &
Company's standard distribution channels.
"Our backlog of great books has simply become too big to release through our regular channels," said Clark
Peterson, President of Necromancer Games Inc. "Kenzer was a logical choice for us, after all, who
else besides the Hackmasters themselves would understand 1st Edition feel as well as us?" said Bill Webb,
co-founder of Necromancer Games.
The partnership with Kenzer & Company has no effect on Necromancer Games' remaining part of Sword &
Sorcery Studios. "We are deeply committed to our partners at Sword & Sorcery Studios. This venture between
Kenzer and Necromancer Games is really just an expansion of our adventure line and a logical pairing of two
of the leaders in the industry," Peterson commented.

Specially Designed Character Sheet and Combat Sheet
|
October 26, 2004: Necromancer Games worked closely with Patrick Murphy, the character sheet guru, to develop
these two sheets.
The first is the Ultimate Character Sheet. It condenses the most important game information into a two-sheet
format. Ease of use at its finest!
The second is the Ultimate Combat Sheet. Third Edition is notoriously full of bonuses and modifiers. In the heat
of combat it is hard to figure them all out on the fly. This sheet allows you to pre-figure all your normal ability bonuses
and common buffs so that you know exactly what your bonus to hit, AC, saves and other key stats are under all
circumstances. Don't short yourself of that extra +1 when you need it!
Necromancer Games understands "roll playing" and these sheets help you get "less chatter and more
splatter".

Vindication! offers a unique adventure that includes opening vignettes, a wilderness for
exploration, a detailed city and a multi-level dungeon setting. The main antagonist elicits a personal grudge from
the group and does not care what their classes or alignments are. The module may be started at just about any time
in the character's lives, although the dungeon should be only explored when the characters reach 10th-level. Some
groups might actually join the avatar's operations. Ample tactical and strategic help for the DM is provided to
ensure the ensuing battles are those that the characters never forget... if they live.

surrounded by a magical containment field that keeps its denizens from spilling into the innocent world beyond.
Within the gate lies one of the true blights of the Domain of Hawkmoon, an immense graveyard that serves as the
prison for the doomed spirits of thousands of history's most awful criminals. Those inside are determined to
escape, and one of them may have found a way...

Monte Praises Tome of Horrors II!
|
January 20, 2004: Here are a few quotes from Monte Cook about our upcoming monster compendium Tome of Horrors II:
"If a role playing game is a gun, then a monster book is the ammunition. If that's the case, then Tome of Horrors is
a case of hollow point, explosive shells!"
--Monte Cook
"This book is all about new surprises, like the bloodsuckle, the fear guard, and the thundershrike. Your players
won't be expecting these guys. They won't know how these monsters work, what they do, or how to properly fight them. You
can use this book to keep your players off balance throughout an entire campaign. There's no better way than throwing them
a curve like some of the monsters contained in these pages. Each and every one of these creatures has some aspect to them
that will make an encounter different from any other. You'll find yourself coming back to these pages again and
again."
--Monte Cook
"A DM can never run out of tricks to poke up his sleeves before the session begins, and that's what each one of
the gems in this book really is."
--Monte Cook
Now, does this sound interesting enough? :-)

Wilderlands In Dungeon/Ployhedron!
|
January 18, 2004: Erik Mona of Dungeon/Polyhedron featured the Player's Guide to the Wilderlands
in a two page article in the most recent Polyhedron section of Dungeon magazine.
Erik loves the setting and the product. Here are a few quotes:
"...manages to perfectly fit the spirit of the game's earliest days, providing a glimpse into a fantastic world of
high adventure that's a little bit grittier while at the same time a lot more imaginative that many modern campaign
settings."
"The book speaks seductively to those of us who like our fantasy in the vein of Robert Howard and Jack Vance,
urging us to cast aside the glossy, full color setting books we've grown to love and engage in a torrid affair with one of
the oldest settings known to gaming."
"The book itself is heavy on history but light on modern detail. It's probably most similar to WotC's Living
Greyhawk Gazeteer, in that the focus is on story over rules, so a player of 1st Edition D&D might find the book every bit
as useful as the greenest 3rd Edition newbie."
"...a really great setting."
All from Erik Mona!

Necromancer Games is Expanding!
|
March 11, 2003: Necromancer Games, Inc. has expanded and partnered with Troll Lord Games
to bring more Necromancer Games products to the game table. As of June, 2003 Troll Lord Games will begin publishing
d20 system adventures and sourcebooks for Necromancer Games.
"We just have so many products in our production schedule that we needed another outlet to get them to the gamers," said
Clark Peterson, President of Necromancer Games, Inc. "The guys at Troll Lord Games were the obvious
choice. We share a similar vision and have the same love of adventures and ‘first edition feel.’ Besides, they are the only
ones that can drink as much as Bill [Webb, co-owner of Necromancer Games] and I can," Peterson said.
The partnership with Troll Lords has no effect on Necromancer Games remaining part of Sword & Sorcery Studios.
"We are obviously still very much a part of Sword & Sorcery. This venture between Troll Lords and
Necromancer Games is really just an extension of the friendships we have made with the guys at Troll Lord Games,"
Peterson commented. "Think of it as Mick Jagger making a solo record. It doesn’t mean the Stones have broken up."

Necromancer to Publish Tome of Horrors!
|
Necromancer Games to Publish the Tome of Horrors-a
Compendium of New Monsters and Creatures Converted from First Edition to Third Edition!
LAS VEGAS, Nevada-April 26, 2002: Discussions with Wizards of the Coast
having now been completed, Necromancer Games, Inc., formally announced today
its decision to publish the Tome of Horrors, a compendium of over 400
creatures, most of which are converted from old First Edition monsters, using the d20
and Open Game Licenses under the Necromancer Games and Sword and Sorcery Imprint.
"I think we all felt a little disappointment when we opened the Third Edition Monster Manual
to look for our favorite monster and couldn't find it," says Clark Peterson, President of
Necromancer Games. "Where was the aerial servant, boalisk or the skeletal warrior?
What happened to the mobat, piercer or rot grub? What about the lurker above, dracolisk or
the shadow demon? And where were the Demon Lords and Arch Devils? These are all staples of
my campaign-and I suspect everyone else's as well-yet we don't have them for Third Edition."
According to Peterson, the Tome of Horrors provides those monsters and much more,
all converted from their original sources and fully formatted for the Third Edition rules.

detailing the final levels of the world's most famous

|
Abysthor Found Alive, Module Recalled!
|
OK, the post about Tomb of Abysthor being recalled
was a gag. A little April Fools fun from the folks at
Necromancer. If you didnt see the gag post, you can
find it here.
In fact, Tomb is on store shelves now! It is 96 pages
of juicy dungeon goodness. For $11.95, it cant be
beat! Designed for 4 to 6 characters of 2nd through
8th level, the Tomb of Abysthor details a lost valley,
several abandoned shrines to Muir, the goddess of
paladins, and the now desecrated burial halls once
sacred to her. The module describes all 9 dungeon
levels in addition to the wilderness areas and the
shrines. Many new monsters, including a new monster
race, new magic items and new spells and cleric
domains make this module much more than an
adventure--it is a mini-campaign designed to take
characters from 2nd level to 8th level or higher!
| Abysthor Found Alive, Module Recalled |
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 1: Stunned citizens of Bard's Gate awoke to see
a dusty and somewhat beaten Abysthor--the long missing
and presumed dead cleric of Thyr--stroll through the
northern gate.
"I got caught in the dungeon for a while. Lots of evil
there. But dont worry everyone, I took care of it all,
Praise Thyr" said a weary Abysthor. "Everything is
back to normal. Rumors of my death were greatly
exaggerated," Abysthor explained to a growing
congregation.
As a result, Necromancer Games has recalled all copies
of the dungeon module The Tomb of Abysthor.
Asked about the recall, Clark Peterson, President of
Necromancer Games, explained "Well, there isnt really
much point in releasing the dungeon module now.
Abysthor claims--and we confirmed it--that he has
wiped out all the evil in the dungeon. There's nothing
left for players to do. I don't really see any point
in putting out a module that doesnt contain any
monsters to kill or evil temples to destroy. Thats not
much fun."
Peterson explained further: "Abythor also told me he
took his old pal Helman the rogue to the dungeon and
he disabled all the traps--even the magical ones. We
sent in a group of old school 1E halfling thieves and
he's right...the place is clean. No treasure either.
We dont have any choice. We are recalling the module."
There is some hope. Peterson explained: "Luckily for
those who preordered the module before Abythor cleaned
out the dungeon, your copies will contain tons of bad
guys and traps. So I guess there is a silver lining to
every cloud."
Peterson offered the following advice to disappointed
delvers: "Hey, there's always Rappan Athuk!"

supplement, Bard's Gate. We've

| Necromancer Games to Publish Grimtooth's Traps
for Third Edition |
For Immediate Distribution:
Press Release: Necromancer Games to Publish
Grimtooth's Traps Returns!
October 10, 2001-Las Vegas, NV: Necromancer Games,
Inc., announced today that it has reached an agreement
with Flying Buffalo, Inc., to license the Grimtooth's
Traps property and will be publishing a hardcover book
containing a selection of material from the famous
line of Grimtooth Traps products. The hardcover book
to be released by Necromancer Games tentatively titled
The Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps is scheduled for
release in May of 2002 and will be published under the
Sword and Sorcery logo using the Open Game and d20
Licenses. The Necromancer Games release will spearhead
reprint by Flying Buffalo of all the Grimtooth's Traps
products.
"With the release of the new edition of the rules, we
have been looking for a way to re-launch the Grimtooth
series of products and we believe we have found the
perfect situation with Necromancer Games," said Rick
Loomis, President of Flying Buffalo. When questioned
about the Necromancer product, Grimtooth the well
known troll commented, "Hey, they offered me gold,
what can I say? Besides, I get to punish anyone from
Necromancer who does something I don't like!"
Grimtooth can be reached by email at
grimtooth@evil.com.
"Our slogan is 'Third Edition Rules, First Edition
Feel,' and it is a great privilege for us here at
Necromancer to bring content from Grimtooth's Traps-a
staple of First Edition play-to the Third Edition game
table," said Clark Peterson, President of Necromancer
Games. "The devious evil of the traps and the
lighthearted presentation of the character of
Grimtooth were a perfect fit for Necromancer Games,"
Peterson said, looking over his shoulder to make sure
Grimtooth wasn't around.
The Wurst of Grimtooth's Traps, a hardcover book
planned to run 224 pages, will include selections of
the devious traps detailed in the seven Grimtooth's
Traps products. "The book won't just be a reprint. We
are taking our favorite traps and updating them for
the Third Edition rules," says Peterson. The book will
also contain a number of trap and rogue related items
of equipment and magic items as well as new prestige
classes, skills and feats related to traps and trap
creation. Capping off the product will be a revision
and reinterpretation of the famed Dungeon of Doom, a
treacherous trap-filled dungeon built to challenge the
most skilled characters and using many of the traps
and items detailed in the book itself, redesigned by
the Necromancer Games team. Steve Crompton, the
original artist for the Grimtooth series, is slated to
provide art for the new book.
Following Necromancer Games' release of The Wurst of
Grimtooth's Traps, Flying Buffalo is slated to begin
releasing reprints of the classic Grimtooth books:
"The Necromancer guys have their favorite stuff, and
have added a lot of great new content, but with the
reprints you can get all the Grimtooth content in the
way it was originally presented," says Loomis. Each
reprint will also contain an appendix converting the
material to the current version of the world's most
popular fantasy roleplaying game. The Grimtooth line
includes Grimtooth's Traps, Grimtooth's Traps Too,
Grimtooth's Traps Fore, Grimtooth's Traps Ate,
Grimtooth's Traps Lite, Grimtooth's Traps Bazaar and
the Dungeon of Doom.

| Heartfelt Condolences to the Victims and Families of this Tragedy |
September 11: Bill Webb and I are in the business of making games where fictional characters overcome fictional danger and fictional evil to become fictional heroes. But those fictional heroes pale in comparison to real heroes--police officers, fire fighters, rescue crews, friends, family and medical personnel--who risked their real lives in the face of this very real danger and evil. On behalf of Necromancer Games, Bill and I wish to thank those real heroes and to express our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families, loved ones and friends of the victims of this deplorable terrorist attack.

| PRESS RELEASE: Rob Kuntz, Co-founder of
Original Dungeons and Dragons, to Bring City of Brass
and Other Titles to Necromancer
Games! |
LAS VEGAS, Nevada—May 16, 2001: Necromancer Games, Inc.
announced today its agreement with Rob Kuntz, a co-founder with Gary
Gygax and Dave Arneson of Original Dungeons and Dragons, to publish
and market his ground-breaking fantasy adventures using the d20 and
Open Game Licenses under the Necromancer Games and Sword and Sorcery
Imprint.
“Our slogan is ‘Third Edition Rules, First Edition Feel,’ so we
are obviously pleased to be working with Mr. Kuntz. As a co-founder
of Original Dungeons and Dragons, he epitomizes the creativity of
the early products that Necromancer Games is trying to bring back to
the new edition of the game,” said Clark Peterson, President of
Necromancer Games. “Mr. Kuntz’s vision and creativity are unmatched.
We are excited to help bring his works into the d20 arena.”
“I am very happy to embrace the ‘First Edition Feel,’ which
Necromancer brings to its line of d20 products by publishing a
select number of my projects through them,” says Rob Kuntz, who
welcomes fan email on this
and other topics. “Necromancer’s product line aspires to be
competitive in product mix, offering a wide variety of choices for
those gamers which seek above standard products in many categories.
I believe in taking players and placing them in strange and
fantastic settings. The products I am creating for Necromancer Games
will do just that. My hope is to bring back the ‘fantasy,’ which has
long been missing in so many Fantasy RPG products, to the DMs and
players through such an arrangement.”
Veteran gamers know that Mr. Kuntz, along with Gary Gygax and
Dave Arneson, created the original Dungeons and Dragons game back in
1974. Mr. Kuntz contributed to the original boxed set and to
Supplement 1: Greyhawk. In addition, Mr. Kuntz co-DMed
the famous original Greyhawk campaign along with Gary Gygax. He was
the sixth person hired when TSR was originally formed. He
contributed to and edited Supplement 2: Blackmoor as
well as wrote the classic Gods, Demigods and Heroes
Supplement with Jim Ward, which later became the hard-back
Deities and Demigods. He edited the classic
Empire of the Petal Throne. He contributed heavily to
the ground-breaking First Edition module Expedition to the
Barrier Peaks. He has written various articles for Dragon
Magazine, such as “Sorcerer's Scroll,” which he started and
which was later picked up by Gary Gygax after Mr. Kuntz left the
industry. Later, he published Mordenkainen's Fantastic
Adventure, as well as his own works, including the
Maze of Zayene series and Garden of the
Plantmaster through his own company, Creations Unlimited. He
contributed to the Second Edition module the Fate of
Istus. He was TSR’s Content Editor for their licensing of
the D&D name for product released through Judges Guild. He has
also published several board games, including King of the Tabletop,
Magus, Kings & Things, which won the Charles Roberts Award in
1986. Mr. Kuntz is also slated to write a column for reviewing and
benchmarking d20 products in Corsair Publishing's new Campaign
Magazine.
“We first began to speak with Mr. Kuntz about his City of Brass
adventure—an adventure he started long ago but never finished. We
have always felt that the old cover of the First Edition Dungeon
Master’s Guide with the City of Brass epitomized the epic and
fantastic elements of fantasy roleplaying. We are excited to help
Mr. Kuntz realize this vision and bring this and other projects to a
new generation of fans and to veterans alike.”
Necromancer Games will first publish Rob Kuntz’s Maze of
Zayene series—a series of four modules detailing a plot to
assassinate the evil King Ovar and the machinations of his
treacherous wizard, Zayene. “These are not simple reprints. Mr.
Kuntz is reworking and updating them for the new edition of the
rules. In addition, Mr. Kuntz is writing a completely new fifth
installment in the series, Hidden Realms of Zayene,
which extends the series with a plot twist befitting his brilliance
as an adventure writer,” says Clark Peterson. Next, Necromancer will
publish Mr. Kuntz’s City of Brass series—an epic set
of adventures in the elemental planes of fire and ice, revolving
around the occupants of the fabled City of Brass and embroiling the
players in the struggles of the lords of the elemental realms.
Necromancer Games will also publish a revised and updated version of
Garden of the Plantmaster.

can still give it a shot. And now we have even posted the solution
so that those of you who can't figure it out can still get the

| Open Writer Call for Treasure Maps and
Lairs! |
Notice as of March 25, 2002: Submission guidelines
are being revised and will be reposted soon. Currently
we are only accepting completed manuscripts for review
from unpublished authors. Previously published authors
may submit proposals. Feel free to email Clark
Peterson at clark@necromancergames.com if you have
questions in the interim.
February 8: We are pleased to announce an open writer call
for a new product line--Treasure Maps and Lairs. How
many times as a DM have you ignored the "treasure map" result on the
treasure table because they are too much of a headache to create? No
longer. Treasure Maps and Lairs is a module containing
a collection of short dungeons and lairs centered around treasure
maps. We are accepting submissions (completed manuscripts only) from
new writers as well as established authors. If you want to try your
hand at adventure writing but the task of writing a 48 page module
all by yourself seems like too tall an order or if you are an
established author who wants to quickly establish themselves with
Necromancer Games, this is the opportunity for you.
Check out the Submission Guidelines for Treasure Maps and
Lairs. The guidelines contain a portion of a sample
submission so you can see what we are looking for. If you have
trouble downloading the Submission Guidelines just email us and we
will send you a copy! You also have to download our Disclosure Form. Get those submissions in
quickly and you just might be published by GenCon! That doesn't
suck...

The early fan opinions are in:
Both Rappan Athuk and the Crucible of Freya are
products on the level of the original Ravenloft module, which I
consider to be the best 1st ed. product ever produced. Please keep
up the good work and your superb support of your games and I will be
a life long customer.
--Austin Diaz
Just want you to know I loved Rappan Athuk and am
looking forward to the rest of the 'R' series.

we heard you. Go to our Free Stuff
page and you can download a PDF file contianing an Encounter
Level Chart for The Crucible of Freya. We also threw in
notes about individual and group story awards. And just for fun, we

| Talk About Dedicated
Fans... |
January 11: Wow. A dedicated Necromancer Games fan
sent in this little gem--a summary of the history of Orcus, drawn
from all sorts of First and Second Edition sources. Even though we
don't feel bound by the "Second Edition" Canon material, we couldn't
resist sharing. Check out Shane O'Connor's Brief History of
Orcus here.

| December 18: |

|
Another thing you will notice is our new
Necromancer Games logo. We thought long and hard about what
our logo should be and there was really only one choice. Our
motto is "Third Edition Rules, First Edition Feel," and
nothing is more "First Edition" than the demon princes. So,
without further ado, please welcome Orcus, "the official
mascot of Necromancer Games." Who else could it be, really?

| Crucible of Freya at Stores Near
You and Fans Love It! |
| January 29: |
|
Crucible of Freya has been out
for a little while now and the feedback has been overwhelming.
It looks like the "wow"s have it. Here is a sample:
Wow! That's all I have to say. Wow! For most of my DMing
career I've been put off by published adventures. Let me say
that you all have restored my faith in supplemental gaming
material.
--Lucias Meyer
I just finished reading through the module and I must
say "wow". It's been a long time since I've purchased a module
that I could run without adding more detail to it (I'm picky
like that), but I don't need to change anything in this.
--Chris Curtis
I just got the Crucible of Freya and my only
complaint is I want MORE! Great job guys! I can't wait to see
what else you've got up your sleeves!
--Steve Vogel
As a humble testament to the quality of this magnificent
adventure, my roleplaying group insisted on gathering 4 nights
in a row so as to play out the adventure, because none of my
players could wait for our next regular weekly session to get
back into it.
--Robert Baker
First, I just want to say how incredible your products
are. I downloaded The Wizard's Amulet, and was so
totally blown away by the quality of it! I immediately went
out and bought the Crucible of Freya. Thank you for
restoring my faith in 3rd Edition rules, and D&D as a
whole.
--Shane O'Connor
You guys are easily the early leaders of the d20 pack.
You have an obvious grasp of what makes good gaming material.
I haven't felt for gaming products in a long time. Good for
you.
--Scott Nolan
We agree! You can download The Wizard's
Amulet free from a link further down the page.
You can order Crucible of Freya online by

| Reviews of the Creature
Collection |
October 10: The Creature Collection is out and
the reviews are overwhelmingly positive!
Clinton Nixon had this to say:
I've heard the Creature Collection referred to as the "Fiend
Folio" of 3rd Edition, and it looks like that's an accurate title.
This source book is a worthy addition to your D20 collection, and
will provide GMs much amusement, and provide players plenty of
reasons to tear their hair out.

Maggie Vinning from the e-zine AtFantasy had this to say:
The new Creature Collection from Sword and Sorcery Studios
should be a reading requirement for any self-respecting
DM.

PRESS RELEASE: Necromancer Games to Publish Necropolis by Gary Gygax!
|
For Immediate Distribution:
October 9, 2001-Las Vegas, NV: Necromancer Games
announced today that it has resurrected the famous
adventure Necropolis, originally written by Gary
Gygax. Set in a far off desert kingdom, Necropolis is
both a campaign source book and a detailed and lengthy
adventure for characters of 10th to 18th level. The
hardcover adventure is scheduled for release in July
of 2002 and will be published under the Sword and
Sorcery logo using the Open Game and d20 Licenses.
"Adding a product by Gary Gygax really helps us
realize our slogan of 'Third Edition Rules, First
Edition Feel,'" says Clark Peterson, President of
Necromancer Games. Necropolis, which had a very
limited initial release over 10 years ago, is being
revamped by the Necromancer Games design team. "We
don't do reprints. This is a wholesale revision of an
amazing product with the blessing and input of Gary
Gygax himself. Hard core gamers have probably heard
about this product but never seen it. We are pleased
to bring this cult classic to the Third Edition game."
Necropolis is a sweeping sourcebook for a massive high
level campaign set in the southern desert kingdoms.
"Imagine a huge desert wilderness adventure
culminating in the Tomb of Horrors on crack-that about
describes Necropolis," said Bill Webb of Necromancer
Games. "Plus the adventure provides an incredible
amount of detail on the culture and religion of an
entire ancient desert civilization," says Webb. The
224 page hardcover adventure and sourcebook details a
campaign where the players interact with the very gods
themselves. New magic items and monsters, new gods and
spells fill this sourcebook. Devious traps, wicked
opponents and interesting NPCs populate the villages,
temples and dungeons contained in the adventure, which
details hundreds of miles of an ancient desert
kingdom.
Join the Caravan of Serai, visit the Village of
Aartuat, defeat the demon crocodile, brave the bandit
hordes of the Desert Roads and the Bloody Moon, pass
the Pylon of Duat, seek the Temple of Osiris and the
secrets held within, explore the Gorge of Osiris where
the Necropolis awaits and loot the ancient tomb of
Set-Ra-Hotep!
"If you are looking for the coolest and biggest high
level campaign ever, this is it," says Webb. "You have
never seen anything like Necropolis."

Crucible of Freya Draws Rave Reviews!
|
January 11:
Crucible of Freya is drawing rave reviews!
It easily ranks among the best D&D modules of all time and serves as an excellent campaign starter.
--Jesse Dean, AtFantasy.com. Read the full review
here.
This is the best low-level D&D dventure out there right now, and I recommend it highly.
The module has 48 pages, of which 46 is real adventure content...This is the best value for your money
out there for a d20 intro module by far.

Read an Interview with Clark Peterson and Bill Webb of Necromancer Games
|
Clark Peterson and Bill Webb, the writers behind
Necromancer Games, were recently interviewed by Role-Play News, a
prominent on line roleplaying magazine. Here is an excerpt:
Role-Play News: How do expect to accomplish that "1st Edition
Feel" with your adventures?
Clark: First Edition
is the cover of the old DMG with the City of Brass; it is Judges
Guild; it is Type IV demons not Tanaari and Baatezu; it is the Vault
of the Drow not Drizzt Do'urden; it is the Tomb of Horrors not the
Ruins of Myth Drannor; it is orcs not ogrillons; it is mind flayers
not Ilithids (or however they spell it); it is Tolkien, Moorcock,
Howard and Lieber, not Eddings, Hickman, Jordan and Salavatore; it
is definitely Orcus and the demon-princes and not the Blood War; it
is Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound not Elminster's Evasion; and it is
Artifacts and Relics from the old DMG (with all the cool
descriptions).
I always say we want to be the VW Bug of roleplaying companies,
meaning that we want to have a modern style and appeal but an
obvious link to the past. One of the ways we do that is how we
design the modules. For example, we use full color covers (not that
funky mono-color of the old modules). But our modules have the same
basic format of the old modules—inset art, module number in the
upper left corner, diagonal band in the upper left corner, logo
placement, etc. I guarantee you, when you look at one of our modules
you will flash back to the old ones—just like when you see a new VW
bug. And hopefully you will say "Man, that is just like an old
module except cooler."
Role-Play News: How important do you think D20 will become in
the RPG industry?
Bill: We believe that the D20
license is the best thing that has happened to gaming in years. WotC
should be commended for providing an open format for folks like us
to get material out to other people. This should be a win-win
situation for all, and I wholeheartedly believe that the growth in
numbers of gamers will make WotC richer, and will provide
intellectual growth from sharing of ideas that was formerly
relegated to only a few. I think that the d20 program will provide a
unique opportunity to see some really great things in the
role-playing industry, as a more diverse set of writers can now be
heard from.
